Chinook Nation Working To Secure Recognition

They Lost Over 20 Years Ago.

The Chinook Indian Nation is once again searching for a champion in Congress after efforts to restore their federal recognition hit a political roadblock. The tribe told The Daily News that Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez made last-minute changes to their bill, stripping natural resource rights and forcing them to walk away. Chinook Chairman Tony Johnson they are working to secure the recognition they lost more than 20 years ago. Without it, the tribe remains ineligible for federal benefits, including health care, education grants, and emergency aid.
