City of Aberdeen Launches Major US 101 Corridor Improvements

The City of Aberdeen will begin construction this April on a major improvement project along the US 101 corridor, stretching from the Chehalis River Bridge to the Cosmopolis city limits. The project was awarded in February to Reed Trucking & Excavating, Inc.

These upgrades are aimed at improving safety, accessibility, and overall mobility for everyone who uses the corridor—including drivers, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders.

Project Highlights

Planned improvements include:

• New sidewalk segments to fill existing gaps
• ADA-compliant curb ramps for better accessibility
• Intersection bulb-outs to increase pedestrian visibility
• High-visibility crosswalks
• Buffered bike lanes with on-street parking
• Dedicated transit pull-out stops
• A “road diet,” reducing the roadway from two lanes in each direction to one lane each way, plus a center two-way left-turn lane

A similar road design was successfully implemented during the downtown Market Street project completed in 2015.

Funding & Timeline

The project is primarily funded through $2.1 million in federal and state grants administered by the Washington State Department of Transportation and the Washington State Transportation Improvement Board. Remaining costs will be covered by the City of Aberdeen’s Transportation Benefit District.

Construction is expected to continue through the summer, with completion tentatively scheduled for late fall.

What to Expect During Construction

Motorists and residents should plan for:

• Shoulder and lane closures
• Lane shifts along US 101
• Temporary closures of side streets

Drivers and pedestrians are urged to stay alert, follow posted signage, and obey flagging personnel to ensure safety throughout the construction period.
