Several new laws in the state of Washington will go into effect starting Thursday, January 1, 2026. Washington’s Paid Family and Medical Leave program will adjust its job-protection requirements. The state’s family law code will reflect changes in how courts calculate and apply child support orders. Several provisions will also be updated relating to the rights of victims, survivors, and witnesses in criminal and civil proceedings. Washington’s current tobacco tax will now apply to all nicotine-containing products, and there will be changes in property law that affect the governance of condominiums and shared-property communities.
