State Money For Tsunami Schools

Washington state is investing over $150 million to move three coastal schools out of tsunami danger zones and build a vertical evacuation tower at a fourth.

Washington state is investing over $150 million to move three coastal schools out of tsunami danger zones and build a vertical evacuation tower at a fourth. The move comes as educators face the high-stakes challenge of evacuating students on foot within 20 minutes in the event of a Cascadia megathrust earthquake. While school officials say the funding is a relief, many other vulnerable schools in places like Aberdeen, Hoquiam, and Long Beach remain on hold due to state budget cuts. Lawmakers and school leaders agree more work is needed to keep kids safe, especially in small districts that can’t afford seismic upgrades on their own.
