Two Hoquiam council members are pushing back on a permanent expansion of the city’s utility discount program, saying there’s no reliable way to pay for it. Robert Gillis and Greg Larsen warn the plan could drain reserves needed for road repairs, storm damage and other city services. Their alternative is a voluntary Neighbor Relief Fund, with donations used to help residents facing temporary financial trouble. The two council members say they’ll donate one month of their council pay to get it started. A public hearing could be scheduled at an upcoming meeting.
