Washington Department Of Ecology Fines Cosmo

After repeated failures by the owner to manage hazardous materials and comply with regulations.

Storage tanks and environmental equipment at the idle Cosmo Specialty Fibers pulp mill are deteriorating, creating dangerous conditions for nearby the Chehalis River, and Grays Harbor. Grays Harbor Scanner reports the mill has not operated since 2022 but still holds more than 800,000 gallons of corrosive chemicals, some of which are leaking. The Washington Department of Ecology has fined Cosmo $2.3 million and ordered an environmental cleanup after repeated failures by the owner to manage hazardous materials and comply with regulations. Officials warn that the risk of a major spill will keep growing if the owner does not act quickly to secure the site.
