Senate Bill 5947 "Sheriff Bill" Update

The legislation now heads to Governor Ferguson and would still create new statewide standards for law enforcement.

A last minute change to a bill in Olympia means the Pacific County sheriff will keep his job. Earlier versions of Senate Bill 5974 included a rule requiring five years of law enforcement experience that could have forced Sheriff Daniel Garcia out of office. Garcia, elected in 2022, was the only sitting sheriff in the state who would have been impacted. Lawmakers revised the bill so the requirement will not apply to current sheriffs. The legislation now heads to Governor Ferguson and would still create new statewide standards for law enforcement.
