Aberdeen City Council Looks To Raise Taxes

The first reading of an ordinance in Aberdeen to raise the utility tax in town passes with a 6-4 vote.

The first reading of an ordinance in Aberdeen to raise the utility tax in town passes with a 6-4 vote. As city leaders look at ways to shore up a $3 million budget shortfall, some say raising the utility tax would go a long way to making up the deficit. It was estimated that raising the cable tv tax by 1.5 percent and raising the water and sewer utility tax by 5 percent would bring in an extra $968,000. City leaders say if the tax increase is approved it would equal about $6 more per month, per customer. If approved the tax hike would go into effect in January.
