Daniel Garcia says Senate Bill 5974 would let an unelected board remove a sheriff and limit who can run for the office. Garcia says the proposal undercuts the will of voters who choose their sheriff at the ballot box. Lawmakers backing the bill argue it adds accountability, while opponents say elections already provide that check.
