The Pacific County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents to take precautions as reports of black bear activity increase across the area. Deputies say most bear encounters happen because bears are attracted to unsecured garbage, pet food, or bird feeders. Residents are encouraged to secure food sources, never feed bears, and report sightings to the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's WILDCOMM dispatch center. Officials also remind people to stay calm during a bear encounter, never run, and use bear spray if necessary.
