Aberdeen Police officers responded to a two-vehicle collision Saturday morning, September 19, at the intersection of Fifth Street and Broadway Street. Despite significant damage to both vehicles, no injuries were reported.
Officers were dispatched to the scene at approximately 10:57 a.m. after receiving reports that children could be heard screaming and that one of the vehicles had come to rest against a fire hydrant.
When officers arrived, they found significant damage to both vehicles, with airbags deployed. Because of the circumstances and the ages of the children involved, the Aberdeen Fire Department was called to the scene to evaluate everyone involved.
According to the investigation, a 2016 Honda driven by a 24-year-old Hoquiam resident had stopped at the posted stop sign at Fifth Street and Broadway Street before entering the intersection. The Honda was then struck by a 2024 Dodge driven by a 16-year-old Aberdeen resident.
The impact sent the Honda off the roadway, where it struck and ran over a school-zone sign before coming to rest on the grass planting strip. The Dodge veered to the right after the collision and struck a fire hydrant.
The crash also required assistance from several City of Aberdeen departments. The Aberdeen Water Department responded to address the damaged fire hydrant, while city electricians responded to deal with exposed wiring associated with the school-zone light.
Following the investigation, the driver of the Honda was issued an infraction for failure to yield the right of way.
