The first reading on an abandoned building ordinance in Aberdeen passed a city council vote this week. The idea behind the ordinance is to make property owners responsible for maintaining properties that are not in use. At is week’s meeting some council members wanted the area included in the ordinance to be extended. Supporters say rundown buildings are a magnet for crime and by charging fees for vacant properties, it would put the responsibility of keeping up the area back on property owners instead of on the city.
