The South Bend School District is getting closer to choosing a new mascot. In 2021 a Washington state law was passed that prohibited school sports teams to have Native American names. The South Bend Indians were on the list of schools that had to comply. The mascot names that have received the most support and therefore are being considered are River Hawks, War Hawks, Bears and Timbers. A committee will choose two finalists this month and the school board will decide on a new mascot by March 1st.
