Winlock High School Student Serves As House Page For Rep. Jim Walsh

A student at Winlock High School, recently traveled to Olympia to serve as a page in the state House of Representatives.

Hailey Schwarz, 15, a student at Winlock High School, recently traveled to Olympia to serve as a page in the state House of Representatives. Rep. Jim Walsh was her legislative sponsor.

"Hailey did a great job this week," said Walsh, R-Aberdeen. "I hope she enjoyed her time at the Capitol, making new friends and learning more about the Legislature."

As a page, Hailey learned to navigate the many buildings around the Capitol campus, delivering messages and documents to legislators and staff, and assisting on the House floor. She attended page school each day to learn and understand the operations of the Legislature.

"Some things are learned better by doing them. Serving as a House page gives students a distinctive, unique civic education experience that can't be found in a classroom," continued Walsh. "For many students, it leads to a lifetime of engagement in local, state, and even national government."

Hailey is the daughter of Michael and Megan Schwarz. Her interests and hobbies include volunteering as an associated school body activity coordinator and taking part in Girl Scout activities.

Each year, students from around the state apply to participate in the legislative page program. Students spend a week attending page school, learning the inner workings of state government, and assisting legislators on the House floor. Pages earn $50 a day and can earn up to 20 hours of community service while serving in the program.

To become a page, applicants must have a legislative sponsor, be between the ages of 14 and 16, and obtain written permission from their parents and school. For more information about the House page program, click here.
